Undeclared Advising
Welcome to your Career Home!
Being undeclared doesn't mean you're missing a plan. It means your plan starts here, with the question "what kind of life and work do I actually want?" instead of "what do I pick right now?" That's a career question before it's a major question, and it's exactly why undeclared advising lives at the Career Center.
You have a team of people whose job is to help you find that answer: your professional academic advisor here at the Career Center, your faculty advisor through University Studies, and a community of other undeclared students doing this alongside you.
You are not behind. You're doing the work in the order that actually makes sense.
Meet with an Advisor
Need help choosing classes or exploring your academic options? You have two advisors here to support you:
Hallie Lepphaille is your Professional Academic Advisor for undeclared students and is based in the Career Center.
Prefer email? Reach Hallie at lepphaille@sonoma.edu.
Dr. Kyla Walters Doughty is your faculty advisor through University Studies.
Schedule with Dr. Walters Doughty
Prefer email? Reach her at kyla.walters@sonoma.edu.
You're welcome to meet with either advisor (or both) whatever's most useful for where you're at. Together, they help you connect who you are to what you want to do next.
Discover your path
Exploring careers and interests early (before you've locked in a major) tends to lead students to the right fit faster, not slower. As you take GE classes and try things out, career exploration gives you a low-stakes way to test ideas against reality: What would a day in this field actually look like? What do people in this career wish they'd known sooner? Those questions often point toward a major long before "which department" does.
There's no single timeline for this, and taking your time isn't falling behind. It's how the process is supposed to work.
Ready to declare a major?
When you've found your fit, complete the Change Major/Minor form. For additional program information, consult the program's website.
Declaring doesn't mean leaving the Career Center behind. This relationship continues well past your major, into internships, jobs, and whatever comes after. Wondering who your new academic advisors will be? Find Your Advisor by program.
